Sonnet №35 — To Wash One’s Hands

When is it time to wash your hands, to end

an amity once warm, now turned stone-cold?

Have you merely drifted on, not true friends;

time, distance, circumstance taken their toll?

Or is this jagged split, a razor cleaves

two souls apart, one spewing hate, and one

whose heart now rent, bled and broke, cries and grieves

for the acts that a once-friend has now done?

A toxic life, overflown with odious revulse?

Exult their exit from your daily sphere!

No longer need to feel your soul convulse.

They leave your life, poison a new frontier.

Daily wash your hands with water and soap,

your soul set free to ever soar and hope.

This is one of the toughest pieces I’ve written, on one of the toughest subjects. To let people out of your life, to save your integrity and good soul, that is truly difficult. Yet, it has never been more important to do so. If you stay, your are complicit in their wrong-doing and you poison your good self as you rationalize their behavior. Don’t do it. Take it as a teaching, and move on with pride. You know those bad horror movies where there is a glowing red door and people shout “Don’t open that door” but they do anyway and it never ends well? This is that. Those people are your glowing red door.

I’m DStan58 and I’m bringing sonnets back. If you’d like to help, give me a follow and few claps. We can do this!
